– Sammy L. Davis
Davis’ selfless acts of bravery and heroism during the Vietnam War in November, 1967, were depicted in the movie, “Forrest Gump.”
Davis distinguished himself as fifteen hundred Vietcong soldiers launched an intense ground attack with just a river between the opposing sides. Despite serious injuries, Davis struggled to his feet, and using a damaged howitzer, continued to fire upon the enemy. Davis heard his comrades screaming from across the river, and although he didn’t know how to swim, used an air mattress from the American camp to bring his comrades to safer ground. Sergeant Sammy L. Davis received the Medal of Honor from President Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House in 1968.
In addition to receiving the nation’s highest military honor, Davis received the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
